REACTIONS
Reaction videos are becoming increasingly popular on Youtube and more artists need to take advantage of this trendy format of music reviews. These vides are a genre within Youtube that shows Youtubers reacting to another piece of content — usually new music. For example, Kanye West drops a new song, and a flock of Youtubers will record themselves reacting to the song for the first time.
When this trend first started, Youtubers would typically react to only mainstream songs from popular artists. However there’s been a growing trend of Youtubers becoming more open to reacting to relatively unheard of songs from undiscovered artists. Even on Zambah, we’ve noticed that more artists are using our BOOST feature to find Youtubers that will promote their music by creating reaction videos. Most people draw conclusions about a song after one listen. Until now, artists had no view of what fans and critics think of their music after the first listen.
When a song can’t connect with an audience within one listen then it has a low chance of picking up any type of traction. Since the whole concept of reaction videos is built around the initial listening experience, artists can use them as a way to test the likelihood of a new song succeeding.
For example, if you notice that 30 seconds into a reaction video for a song that’s supposed to make people dance and the Youtuber barely moves — you may need to consider doing more work on the song.
Reaction videos are a great resource for constructive criticism. When a Youtuber reacts to your song they won’t just tell you what you want to hear. They have a responsibility to be authentic as possible with their audience, so you can rely on their feedback.
Some Youtubers get really in-depth with their reaction video by providing deep analysis of the lyrics, production and song composition. If there’s something they don’t like about the song, they will offer tips and suggestions to help you make the song better.
Reaction videos can serve as a promotional device for your music since a lot of these Youtubers making these videos have thousands of subscribers. If your song catches the ear viewers after hearing it in a reaction video, there’s potential for them to go and search for it afterwards. Also when viewers see a Youtuber reacting positively to your song, they will be more motivated to add it to their music collection.
